Boat Classes
Paddle to the Headwaters is always trying to refine our event to make it a better experience for paddlers and make the "race" part of the event safer and a better contest between paddlers.

At the suggestion of many racers last year, are changing our boat classes slightly to put boats of similar speeds in the same class.  We are using a system used by other races in California that gets faster racing hulls grouped together and slower recreational boats grouped together.  This is an honor system, so pick the boat class that most closely resembles your craft:

X-1  "Race Single" - Any long, narrow boat such as a Surfski or Olympic k-1 and brands such as the Thunderbolt or PAX 20 CLC and similar.  19 feet long and above and typically under 20 inches wide.  Solo outrigger could also be in this class.

X-2 "Race Double" - Any long skinny double boat: tandem surfski, Olympic k-2 and similar.  Double outriggers could also be in this class.

K-1 "Traditional Kayak Single" - Standard recreational single kayak, typically wider than x-1 (sea kayaks, touring kayaks)

K-2 "Traditional Kayak Double" - Standard recreational tandem kayak, typically wider than x-2 (double sea kayaks and touring kayaks)

C-1 "Recreational/Traditional Canoe Single" - solo standard canoes

C-2 "Recreational/Traditional Canoe Double" - two-person standard canoes

It's not perfect, but it is better than any previous year.  If you have suggestions how to make next year's classes better please let the organizers know.
